About this Monarch Project:
Grumpy’s Bird Refuge & Pollinator Garden, located on private property in the heart of beautiful Midwest City, Oklahoma, currently offers mating and weary migrating birds a safe place to rest and nourish themselves while hydrating, feeding and bathing in multiple water sources, placed at different heights around Grumpy’s home.
This year’s menu offers an abundance of black oil sunflowers and millet, grown organically amongst over 70 Red Cannalilies and left to dry on the stalks for the birds to harvest naturally, like they do in the wild.
For our vital, hard working pollinators, Goldenrod and Cow Thistle have been intentionally planted amongst the Black Eyed Susans to reinforce their fragile stalks, plus their spiny leaves discourage feral cats from hunting songbirds at night – Wild Clematis vines and Orange Trumpet vines are slowly reaching for the cow fencing that covers the stump of a coniferous evergreen tree at the center of Grumpy’s Bird Refuge.
Hopefully, the combined vines and Cow Thistle’s thorns will one day cover everything with protective cover against all predators for the birds to take refuge in a hurry.
The fragrant aroma from Oriental Trumpet lilies wafts over the entire neighborhood as the White Chiffon Rose of Sharon, planted in loving memory of my beautiful, dear Mama; Sharon Tang, prepares to blossom for the first time this spring 2026.
