Pollinator conservation begins with protecting and expanding native habitat for the species it supports. Titled “Building Monarch Habitat Capacity,” this upcoming free online event will feature butterfly advocate Jane Breckinridge, co-founder of the Euchee Butterfly Farm in Leonard, andco-facilitator of the Tribal Alliance for Pollinators (TAP).
Our state’s tribes have been leaders in the protection and advocacy for precious landscapes and resources, as well as at the forefront of habitat restoration and mitigation through collaboration. Since 2014, Breckenridge has been working with Monarch Watch, Dr. Chip Taylor, and seven Oklahoma tribes to provide resources and skills training in support of pollinators. In this webinar, she will share: the history of TAP, how this highly successful alliance functions, a few strategies on milkweed propagation and re-introduction, opportunities and challenges unique to our state and tribal nations, and advice for those who seek to build or strengthen conservation partnerships. She will also address how weather, milkweed pod disease, and Covid-19 have had an impact on their operations.
Breckinridge’s presentation will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Mary Waller, Director of the Oklahoma Monarch & Pollinator Collaborative. Live webinar attendees may pose questions for our speaker by emailing them to waller@oklahomaconservation.org after the program begins. We will get to as many as we are able in our time together.
