I have been rearing monarchs for the past three years and started tagging for the University of Kansas Monarch Watch last season.

I’ve spent the last 6 years, this year is 7, transforming my front yard gardens into a nature buffet complete with many species of butterflies, moths, bees, mantids & spiders. I am continually adding & altering my front yard to feed more individuals.

I have been planting milkweed at my home for several years and last spring, 2017, planted a large raised bed at my school with Kindergarten and PreK students. Fall of 2017 we had dozens of monarchs and other butterflies, moths and insects and are anticipating the return of the monarchs this year. The students and I will be replanting the milkweed that died out over the winter and will be adding a few different varieties.

I remember in the early 1990’s when a flood of monarchs migrated through areas around northeast Oklahoma’s Grand Lake of the Cherokee. I had never before seen this marvelous site and unfortunately have never seen it since. That is why we have begun a butterfly garden in our lakeside yard. Let’s all share and promote our efforts with friends in our communities throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states!
